Hackers have attacked the Japanese crypto exchange Zaif. The person or group of people behind the attack managed to steal cryptocurrencies worth 4,5 billion yen from the users of the exchange and 2,2 billion yen from the company’s assets. In total, it is about 6,7 billion yen or about $59,7 million, writes the Japanese site Prtimes in a report.
Stole 5 966 bitcoin
Zaif stated in a press release that they discovered a server error on September 17, after which the crypto exchange suspended deposits and withdrawals for its users. On September 18, they realized that the error was due to a security breach. They then reported the event to the Japanese Financial Authority (FSA).
The exchange believes about 5 966 bitcoin were stolen. The hackers have also taken bitcoin cash and monacoin, but exactly how much that was sotlen is still being investigated, Zaif writes in the press briefing.
The crypto investment company Fisco Digital Asset Group will now help Zaif to cover the lost customer assets by investing 5 billion yen, about $44,5 million. When they cover the losses with the investment, Fisco Asset Group will become the majority shareholder in the crypto exchange, writes Cointelegraph.
