A person has demanded 300 bitcoin to keep Binance's alleged user information secret.
At the beginning of the week, screenshots of what is alleged to be data from users of the Binance crypto exchange have circulated in groups on the Telegram messaging service.
The screenshots reportedly don’t contain leaked passwords, but rather other information such as names and addresses.
It is uncertain if the information is authentic. The fact that the screen images are not watermarked indicates that this is not the case, Cointelegraph writes.
In an official statement, Binance writes that it is an attempt at extortion.
“We want to inform that an unidentified person has threatened and harassed us. The person requires 300 bitcoin in order not to release 10,000 images whose content is similar to Binance user data. We are still investigating the case to see if the threat is legitimate”, the site writes.
