The cryptocurrency Verge (XVG) seems to have been hit by another hacker attack for the second time in a short period of time.
According to a user on the Bitcointalk forum, one or more hackers have managed to fork the cryptocurrency’s blockchain by manipulating a bug in the code so that some miners could set false timestamps on blocks and then quickly mine new ones.
The attacker (s) allegedly got away with 35 million XVG, worth approximately $1.75 million, in just a few hours, CCN reports.
Verge, a cryptocurrency that you can use in a decentralized way to make fast, efficient and direct transactions completely anonymous, is the 31st biggest currency with a market capitalization of over $666 million, according to Coinmarketcap.
In mid-April, Trijo News reported that it will be used as a means of payment in the porn industry.
Verge has dropped over 15 percent in the past 24 hours.
The world’s biggest news channel for finance CNBC’s talk show “Fast Money” continuously cover the crypto world. The latest guest was Brian Kelly, CEO of BKCM LLC, an investment firm focused on digital currencies. He spoke positively about bitcoin cash, whose price has gone strongly upwards from early April to early May.
Among other things, Brian Kelly pointed out the plans from the cryptocurrency’s mining community “to pool portions of rewards toward building a fund for future development”. He also equated “more on-chain development with potential use cases”, writes Bitcoin News.
However, afterward, there have been criticisms and accusations that CNBC sometimes uses its media power to manipulate different cryptocurrencies, reports Coindaily.
Most of the cryptocurrencies have gone down in the last 24 hours. Among the biggest ones, ethereal (-10.17%), bitcoin cash (-11.44%) and eos (-11.39%) have lost the most.
The one that performed the best was zencash (+6.24%), and worst was bitcoin diamond (-16.89%).
