Most major cryptocurrencies have seen declines during the last 24 hours and the crypto profile John McAfee intends to stop working with ICOs. Here are the top crypto news stories from the last 24 hours.
One of South Korea’s major crypto exchanges, Bithumb, has been hacked. Cryptocurrencies amounting to $30 million has allegedly been stolen. The exchange reports that all stolen cryptocurrencies will be covered by the exchange’s own funds. They have also moved all the users’ assets to cold wallets.
Bithumb has also closed withdrawals and deposits for security reasons, CNBC writes.
Both bitcoin and ethereum prices fell after Bithumb tweeted about the incident, but also recovered some shortly after, according to figures from Coinmarketcap.
Earlier in June, yet another South Korean exchange, Coinrail, was hacked. That attack appears to have been aimed at smaller altcoins and 30 percent of all funds, corresponding to a value of $37 million dollars, was stolen.
The excentric cybersecurity pioneer and ICO promotor, John McAfee, has twittered that he no longer will be working with ICOs.
The reason is the “threats”, to use his own words, from SEC (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission), and that many ICOs will come to be subject of regulations and laws.
Most major cryptocurrencies, such as bitcoin (-1,10%), ripple (-1,21%) and eos (-1,35%), have seen losses in the last 24 hours. The exception being ethereum (+1,04%), which gained some.
The world’s tenth largest cryptocurrency, Tron (+5,75%), has seen some gains as a result of the news that Justin Sun, founder of the project, has purchased the file sharing service Bittorrent for $140 million. The acquisition has, however, received some criticism, for example on Twitter where several people argue that the deal, in fact, is a cover-up for an exit scam.
The cryptocurrencies performing the best was huobi token (+15,89%) and iost (+8,84%), while veritaseum (-9,84%) and fusion (-9,55%) had the poorest development, according to Coinmarketcap.
