The crypto markets have declined in the last 24 hours. At the moment, around 84 of the 100 biggest cryptocurrencies show red numbers.
The market cap for all cryptocurrencies has also declined over the last 24 hours – from $138 billion yesterday to $134 billion today.
That is a $4 billion decline.
Suspected attack on ethereum classic
The big news of the day is a suspected hacker attack against the network of the cryptocurrency ethereum classic. The American crypto exchange Coinbase has reportedly stopped customer transactions on the blockchain for ethereum classic since the network is suspected of having suffered a so-called 51 percent attack.
A 51 percent attack involves controlling over 51 percent or more of the mining power for a cryptocurrency. In this way, it is also possible to take control of the transactions that take place on the network and thereby pay with the same money several times.
In the suspected attack, ethereum classic for a value of nearly $500,000 is believed to have been double spent, Bloomberg reports.
The price of ethereum classic is down over six percent in the last 24 hours.
Bitcoin still around $4,000
If we look at the biggest cryptocurrencies, they also show red numbers during the last 24 hours. Bitcoin cash (-3,78%), ethereum (-3,60%) and xrp (-2,73%) have lost the most, but also eos (-2,32%) and bitcoin (-1,11%) have declined in price.
Bitcoin is currently trading at $4,017, which is around $54 lower than yesterday.
The cryptocurrencies on top 100 that performed the best during the last 24 hours were repo (+36,50%) and crypto.com chain (+11,65%), and the ones that performed the worst were buggyra coin zero (-41,55%) and dex (-31,22%).
