As bitcoin grows in popularity, the risk of robbery also increases for people who have access to large amounts of cryptocurrencies.
The crypto space has long suffered from problems such as ICO frauds or that crypto exchanges are getting hacked. But in most cases, it is only about financial losses.
Now, however, there have been reports of an incident in the Netherlands where a crypto trader got attacked and tortured by armed robbers – in front of his four-year-old daughter, Newsbtc writes.
The robbery took place on Sunday, February 10th in the crypto trader’s home in the town Drouwenerveen in the province of Drenthe in the northeastern Netherlands.
According to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, the robbers knocked on the door at 10:00 p.m. When the crypto trader opened, he was met by three armed robbers. They allegedly were masked with balaclavas and wore bulletproof vests and police clothes.
The robbers threatened the crypto trader with firearms and then allegedly tortured the man with a drill in order to get him to send crypto assets to them. The man’s four-year-old daughter was also in the residence and was forced to watch when her father was tortured. The robbers reportedly stayed in the home for about an hour.
Whether or not the man sent his crypto assets to the robbers or not is still unclear. He was later sent to the hospital with serious injuries.
Reportedly, the robbers had Moroccan accents and left the residence in an Audi A6.
Some 15 police officers are now investigating the case. The robbery is the latest in a string of several violent robberies that have taken place in the area and which is now being investigated by the local police, Newsbtc writes.
