When Facebook announced its plans to launch its own cryptocurrency by the name of libra, several people noted that the name was already used by another well-known company.
Libra is a very popular brand for female hygiene products in Australia and New Zealand, something that several users on Twitter have noted.
The news site Quartz even went as far as to write that it was “culturally ignorant” by Facebook to use a name for a global currency that is already very well known as something else in a certain part of the world.
Ground for lawsuit
One question that was raised was whether Libra wanted to sue Facebook for trademark infringement.
For Trijo News, Asaleo Care, the company that owns the Libra brand, now reveals their thoughts on the subject.
“There are no trademark issues regarding Facebook’s recently announced venture. Our Libra products and theirs are in two very different product categories – ours in feminine hygiene and theirs in cryptocurrency”, writes Sandi Harwood, corporate communications manager at Asaleo Care, in an email to Trijo News.
